The Pakistan Between the Sheets Federation (PBSF) has banned three of its star performers, including Aamir Atlas for allegedly poor performances in the bedroom during the World Between the Sheets team championship, held in Germany in August. Atlas has been banned for two years, while Butt and Manboob (where do they find these names?) were banned for one year and six months, respectively. “We are still probing ( truely the obvious word) to find out why these players put in such sub standard sheet shows, the video evidence and manager’s report clearly show they didn’t attempt to go the extra mile to keep their girls satisfied.The Federation is also taking steps to prevent the trio from participating in the Professional Between the Sheets Circuit (PBSC). A furious Manboob claimed that the PBSF cannot stop him from taking part in the (PBSC) A PBSF official said it was a very serious matter and revealed that the federation had written to both the PBSC and the World Between the Sheets Federation (WBSF) informing them about the situation. “We are still investigating the matter because we want to know the full story behind this sad episode which was very bad for the image of Pakistani virality,” the official said. The PBSF on Tuesday screened the video recordings of the three participants to its executive committee members along with former greats, Linda Lovelace and Dirk Diggler. According to reports, one of the videos of a cruicial sheet session shows Atlas winking to his fellow team members after a very, very lack luster performance between the sheets, as if the poor performance result was pre-planned. Relations between the present PBSF, PBSC and the WBSF has been pretty stormy in recent times with the federation having already banned Manboob once before for giving incorrect length and width statements. Boston, MA – The Trinity College Bantams defeated Yale 5-4 to win their thirteenth consecutive national title at Harvard’s Murr Center. Chris Binnie’s 3-1 win over Richard Dodd clinched the win for the Bantams.
Thanks to a fresh coat of snow overnight, the Harvard campus was the picture of a classic New England winter morning, the perfect backdrop for a showdown of two storied squash programs.
Coming into this afternoon’s match, the Trinity men, who are coached by Paul Assaiante, were ranked number 1 in the nation and had a 19-0 record. The Bantams were twelve-time defending national champions riding a 243-match winning streak, the longest in the history of varsity intercollegiate sports in the United States.
The Yale Bulldogs, coached by Dave Talbott are the 2011 Ivy League champions, and the number 2 seed in the tournament with a 15-1 record coming into the match.
The Bulldogs’ sole loss in the regular season was to Trinity in Hartford in January. Yale came into that match seeking to avenge a loss to Trinity at home in last year’s national team final. That match, which Trinity won 6-3, was overshadowed by an incident of poor sportsmanship that received national attention

The matches on the glass exhibition court finished first, as Trinity’s Parth Sharma and Vikram Malhotra both won their matches. At #8 Robbie Berner won for Yale, and then Johan Detter won at #7 for Trinity.
The match hinged upon the action on court #5. John Roberts of Yale looked to win at number 5, but Randy Lim came back to take the match to five games. Roberts pulled out a win in the final points of an epic contest. With Roberts’ win, the score was tied 4-4.
In the deciding match, Binnie won the first game with a strong performance, though Dodd kept the score very tight. The second game was equally close, but Binnie pulled out another win thanks in part to some stunning volleys. Dodd battled back, making some remarkable gets, and won the third game, taking it to a fourth game. Binnie started to run up the score, and though Dodd looked like he was closing in on the Trinity senior, it wasn’t enough. Binnie won, and after he and Dodd shook hands, the Bantams rushed the court.
Trinity’s winning streak now stands at 244 matches and thirteen consecutive national titles. WOW thats pretty bloody good....2nd best winning streak the squash godfather knows!!

These shoes usually have soles made of gum rubber, which is gentle on courts but firm enough to provide good traction for playing. # Try on several brands of squash shoes before buying. When you play, your feet swell due to increased blood flow to the area, your feet that is, not your groin, so you need to make sure that any squash shoes you buy have room for your feet to swell a little. By trying on shoes when your feet are already a little swollen, you'll know what shoes feel best. # Test out the shoes by moving around as you do when playing. When you play, your foot needs room to move around in the footbed. Undoing Bad Habits...not the nun's variety !!!Let's face it, most of YOU have a few bad habits on the squash court you would like to get rid of. Some people are lazy, not getting back to the T. Others continually hit the ball off the wrong foot or into the tin. Some players may have been playing squash for many years, and rather than take the time to learn the correct technique, they cling to their bad habits, and never make it past the C level.(sounds like most of the squash godfathers opponents)! There is only one way to break bad habits. First you have to consciously learn what you are doing wrong - and then how to do it right. (You may have to ask a pro like the squash godfather for help here.) Then you must drill the correct technique into your head. The key to doing this is just bloody well do it. If after many attempts at trying to break yourself of these bad habits, you find you are still doing them, then you must be pretty bloody thick, and should contemplate giving up!! Matches often just see-saw up and down, especially in the first game, as players search for their opponents weaknesses, both physical and mental.

If you find that you are losing toward the end of the first game(never happened to the squashgodfather), it is vital that you change things, speed it up, slow it down, volley more, what ever, just change, don't stick to a losing plan...just ask the Dockers!!
Use variety,if you become too predictable your opponent can start to read the play and dictate the terms. Always keep him guessing, change some of the little things, eg: play with the opposite hand, take your shoes off, put your shirt over your head, tell him his missus is ugly...its the little things that can get in his head that can turn a match.
In the fourth game the winning player can feel pressure, he can visualize himself holding the trophy and tries like crazy finish the rally.
This is an interesting part of the match where you can apply mental, physical and tactical pressure, by eliminating your errors and make him have to hit the winner, not so easy for most players in the 5Th set!! and put in front an audience and his ugly missus.
There is no substitute for experience in five-setters; and, the more you survive and win the more confidence you will get and the more shit scared of you your opponents will become of you.

One of the biggest decisions a squash player will have to make, is during a PAR match, at 8 all, is whether to call 9 or 10...
Now that I am in the not so youngish stage, at 8 all in a game I am usually buggered, and I know that I can pull out a game winning nick at will, I usually call short...9......remember moto, why take 2 shots when can finish in 1 !!

If you are younger, fitter, and not as gutsy as the squashgodfather, you can play for safety and call 10.

One of the benefits of going short , is that it throws the pressure back to on your opponent, especially if he has been on 8 for a while, whilst you have been on the comeback, to level at 8 all. He will be thinking, that he hasn't been able to win 1 point, let a lone 2...pressure, pressure, pressure.

Next time your at 8 all show some guts... and call short!!!

Throughout my illustrious squash career, there is a motto that I live and die by, "don't take 2 shots, if you can finish it in 1"
My favourite shot number 1, is the forehand smash cross court nick
Over the years this has become one of the most feared returns of serve in Perth.
How it works: opponent serves a lob serve to my forehand, I do a cross court over head smash into the back hand front nick (the nick is where the wall and floor meet)
Always ends up in a rolling dead nick,impossible for my opponent to hit,
thus winning the rally in 1 hit...perfect

squashgodfathers opinion re point a rally (PAR) V hand in hand out (HIHO)

Debate has been raging lately over the change of scoring system, from HIHO to PAR.
Well from my point of view, (is there any other) as I am now old, slow and not as fit as I was in my youth, I prefer the PAR. This is beacuase I am no longer able to grind out matches and wear my oponent into submission, and have to rely on my brilliant shot making and outright winning nicks to finish a match quickly...quicker the better.

2010 is all about rapid (just ask my wife) as is the case in IPL cricket, short and sharp. With PAR there is no long, point less rallies..they are all worth a point. It also makes for much more exciting shot play.

I was recently playing one of the States top juniors in a match under the HIHO scoring system, we had about 10 HIHI's and after 10 minutes it was still love all...and I was buggered..game over.

This is a true story that happened last monday 4th jan 2010. My squash partner was teamed up to play with Pat Cash in the pr-oam of the Hopman cup tennis, this was because his employer was one of the sponsors of the event.
He has had a bad groin injury for the past 6 months, and has not been able to play squash without the benefit of 2 bounces (whilst I take only take one).
Anyway despite his bad groin and lack of movement and fitness, him and Pat Cash were able to win the pro-am........

What this shows in glaring terms, is that you have to be so much fitter and stronger to play squash than tennis.

Forbes Magazine has rated squash as the "healthiest sport."

Squash has been rated as the top sport in a survey of the 'Ten Healthiest Sports' published by respected US business and investment magazine Forbes.

Writer Neal Santelmann explains that "each of these sporting activities is a great way to get you fit--and keep you there."

Ratings were based upon consultations with fitness experts - coaches, personal trainers, competitors and exercise physiologists - as well as "a dash of personal experience". The four basic physiological components of fitness were rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being "excellent," 4 being "darn good," 3 being "good," 2 being "not bad" and 1 being "nothing special."

The survey quantified calorie burn (in parentheses) based upon the energy expenditure of a 190-pound person over 30 minutes and is rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being 450+ calories, 4 being 400-450 calories, 3 being 350-400 calories, 2 being 300-350 calories and 1 being 250-300 calories.

The magazine points out that "Calorie burn rates are from the American College of Sports Medicine; whenever possible, we selected the rate for "moderate" or similar intensity."

Scores were tallied to arrive at an individual rating for each sport. "Of course," added Santelmann, "physiological benefits, injury risks and calorie burn can vary widely depending upon the technique, vigour, care and enthusiasm with which you pursue the sport."

Squash - scored an overall score of 22.5, ahead of Rowing with 22.0 - reads: "The preferred game of Wall Street has convenience on its side, as 30 minutes on the squash court provides an impressive cardio respiratory workout. Extended rallies and almost constant running builds muscular strength and endurance in the lower body, while lunges, twists and turns increase flexibility in the back and abdomen. "For people just getting into the game, it's almost too much to sustain, but once you get there, squash is tremendous," says Paul Assaiante, head coach of the five-time defending national intercollegiate champion men's squash team at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. Assaiante recommends a regimen of yoga, sprinting and distance running for preparation.

The ten sports highlighted in the Forbes survey (in final rating order) were: Squash, Rowing, Rock Climbing, Swimming, Cross-Country Skiing, Basketball, Cycling, Running, Modern Pentathlon and Boxing.

To win a squash match you must spend more time in front of your opponent than behind him/she.
What this means is, that you must dominate the T, always trying to keep front position and your opponent guessing as to where the next shot is going. By keeping front position you are able to control the rally, and have your opponent doing more of the chasing than you.
To be able to keep the all important front position, you must be hitting the ball to a good length, trying to bury your opponent in the back corners, hoping for a forced lose shot to enable you to do a tight drop shot...winner.

Squash balls come basically in 3 different types:

1. double yellow dot, this is the competition ball, it is the least bouncey of the 3 types thus making it the hardest to play with, extremely hard to get to bounce in winter.

2. single yellow dot, previously known as a green dot. This is more bouncey than the double dot, and is used by the casual player. It is easier to warm up and makes for easier rallies.

3. Red dot or coaching ball. This ball is slightly larger than the other 2 types, and is the easieast to play with. It is also used by coaches, to introduce new players to the game, also stays fairly warm.

Squashgodfathers advice on racquets

This is one of the most commonly asked question when someone is starting to get into squash.
When deciding to purchase a racquet a few things to consider, are;

1. how much you are prepared to spend
2. how heavy do you want the racquet
3. grip size, thick or thinner ( major cause of tennis elbow )
4. balance, either the weight is heavier in the head or in the handle.
5. appearance, its no good getting a racquet you hate the look of.

Once you have gone through the above check list, you should, if possible, take 2 or 3 onto a court and have a little test hit with them, this may be impossible if not purchased from a squash centre.

It is also worth noting that the worlds most expensive racquet wont make you a better player, or last longer, so dont be driven by price alone.

This is probably the most volatile part of any squash match.
Firstly what is a let; you replay the point.
What is a stroke; if you served then you win the point, if receiving you win the right to serve.

An easy rule of thumb to use in determining whether a let or stroke should be awarded is; if your opponent hits the ball back within close proximity to himself ( or herself, lets not get sexist )and prevents you from hitting the ball, then I would award a stroke. If you do not have direct acces to the ball, but it is some distance away, and your opponent has tried to get out of the way, the I would award a let.

If you are playing a cheater, as is the case for me with my long time playing partner, then to keep it simple we only play lets, because he is so old and slow he deliberately gets in my way to stop me playing a winning shot.
So to keep the peace we only play lets.
As the Squash Godfather I have threatened him with a horses head many times !!!

The serve is not just the way to start a match, it is the first step in winning the point and the match.
As is shown in men's tennis, with the top players having super fast serves in order to win the point. In squash a good accurate serve can do 3 things;
1. it can be an outright winner.
2. it can allow you to predict where and what shot your opponent is going to play, which allows you to be in a position to hit a winning 2nd shot.
3.it is to tight to allow your opponent to hit a good length return, thus putting you in control of the rally.

So dont just use the serve as a means to start play. use it as part of your winning strategy.

I will talk about the various types of serves in a later post.
